IS IT WORTH IT? | Sephora Play! Box September 2017 Value Analysis

I am back with the latest!

Sephora’s Play! box is supposed to be one of the best beauty boxes out there, so of course I had to try it out. It’s supposed to be the best variety of products and be one of the best bang-for-your-buck beauty boxes. Let’s see how much my September box is worth! The theme this month was “It’s Fall Good” and my box is number is 904.

Method: 🤓

All values are based in USD and based on the retail prices from Sephora.com.

If the product included in the set is a size that they sell I will include that price. However, my final calculation for actual value will be based off the price per volume of the full size or largest product size.

This month I could not approximate the value for the liquid eyeshadow because there is not content weight listed on the package. I have just decided to smack a $5 on it as a plug, so all “price paids” for this month are not as accurate as usual.

Each month’s Sephora Play! box is $10. It includes 5 deluxe sized items, 1 bonus item, and a make-up bag. Currently it only ships to the US.

Definitions:

Full size: Whatever is on Sephora’s website

Retail value: The $ value based on full size pricing

Price paid: How much the individual item contributes to the set’s price

September 2017 Box #904

Touch in Sol: Metallist Liquid Foil and Glitter Eye Shadow Duo

Full size: $25

Retail value: $5*

Price paid: $1.6*

Verdict: Worth It

The color for this sample is ‘talia’. I am super excited to try out the metallic, liquid eye-shadow trend. The full-size for this product is too expensive for me, so I will save this the days that require a little more glam to my look.

Sephora Collection: Contour Eye Pencil 12hr Wear/Waterproof

Full size: $10 for 0.04oz.

Retail value: $4.25

Price paid: $1.37*

Verdict: Not worth it (for me)

The sample came in the color ‘black lace’. I’m a fan of liquid eyeliner so this will really shake things up. I wonder how this will compare to the Marc Jacobs gel liner. In general, I prefer a super precise line, so this may be an item I give away.

Update: I tried it and I kind of hate it. It really does stay on though, however, that’s my problem with it.

Algenist: Genius Ultimate Anti-Aging Cream

Full size: $112 for 2oz

Retail value: $12.88

Price paid: $4.15

Verdict: Not worth it

Wahooo I love skincare, but I currently have so much that I’m not really excited about getting this little pot. I also have the Algenist eye cream in a deluxe sample size that I haven’t used yet that I’ll use with this cream. For now I’m going to add this to my Sephora Favorites travel bag for when I travel next.

Update: I LOVE THIS STUFF. Changing my verdict to worth it! This stuff smells amazing. Also, the texture is unlike anything I’ve ever touched before, it’s kind of spongey? I really don’t know how to describe it. When you take some onto your finger just the right amount slides off the top so you never use too much.

Wander Beauty: Wanderout Lipstick

Full size: $30 for 4.08 oz.

Retail value: $0.52

Price paid: $0.17

Verdict: Worth It

The sample color is ‘wanderberry’. This is not my favorite color on me. However, I love that when you buy the full size Wanderout Lipsticks you get a matching duo set. $30 for 2 lipsticks seems like an awesome deal for people who use lipstick often. Even though it is worth it, for me it’s a toss/gift/swap item because it’s too hard for me to wear.

Fresh: Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream

Full size: $45 for 1.6oz

Retail value: $6.75

Price paid: $2.17

Verdict: Maybe worth it

I’m not sure how good Fresh is for skincare so I wouldn’t try it if it weren’t for this sample. Would I have paid $2.17 for this? No, I love my current Caudalie line up too much.

Update: Don’t like this one as much as the Algenist one. I really don’t like the smell. Idk if it functions better or worse, however I have more fun putting on the Algenist? (Like, I *seriously* love the texture.)

Briogeo: Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask

Full size: $36 for 8oz.

Retail value: $1.80

Price paid: $0.58

Verdict: Worth It

This was this month’s bonus item. I’ve spent more on my dog’s hair than mine in the last 2 years, so my next hair appointment is gonna need to wait. This will make me feel pampered at home while I eye my dog’s new do.

Value of this month’s box: $31.02

This month’s box doesn’t have the screaming value of $42 of last month’s box. Even if I could track down the exact retail value of the eye shadow it wouldn’t make up for more than $10 difference. However, I should point out that Wanderout’s lipstick was a good sized item in this month’s box that didn’t contribute a high retail dollar value. If this was any other brand it would have been at least $1 worth of product.
