IS IT WORTH IT? | Sephora Play! Box August 2017 Value Analysis

IS IT WORTH IT? | Sephora Play! Box August 2017 Value Analysis

If you haven’t caught on already the theme lately has been, subscription boxes + deluxe samples = LOVE!

Sephora’s Play! box is supposed to be one of the best beauty boxes out there, so of course I had to try it out. It’s supposed to be the best variety of products and be one of the best bang-for-your-buck beauty boxes. Let’s see how much my August box is worth! The theme this month was “The Innovators” and my box is number is 130.

This is a little delayed because they currently only ship to the US. This means I can’t use some of the benefits of membership like in-store events or bonus VIB point cards. That’s okay, because the fun for me is in trying all the little goodies!

Method: 🤓

All values are based in USD and based on the retail prices from Sephora.com.

If the product included in the set is a size that they sell I will include that price. However, my final calculation for actual value will be based off the price per volume of the full size or largest product size.

Each month’s Sephora Play! box is $10. It includes 5 deluxe sized items, 1 bonus item, and a make-up bag.

Definitions:

Full size: Whatever is on Sephora’s website

Retail value: The $ value based on full size pricing

Price paid: How much the individual item contributes to the set’s price

August 2017 Box #130

Beauty Blender: Micro Mini

Full size: $18 for 2

Retail value: $9

Price paid: $2.14

Verdict: Worth It

IT’S SO CUTE! I was very excited to get a teeny tiny Beauty Blender in this month’s box because I think they are ridiculously expensive. I cannot imagine forking over $9 for this 1″ sponge – $2.14 is more like it, but still a lot for something that replaces the use of my finger. I just wanted one because Beauty Blenders are so popular and I’ve never had one, but now I do!

Clinique: HIM Dual-Ended High Impact Mascara and Primer Duo

Full size: Mascara $18 for 0.28 oz., Primer $17 for 0.17 oz.

Retail value: $5.14 for the mascara, $8 for the primer

I couldn’t find the volume for the mascara, so I’m assuming it’s the same as the primer end

Price paid: $1.22 for mascara, $1.90 for primer

Verdict: Worth It

Okay, so like while I’m really impressed with the performance of this duo, I have a lot of mascaras already that I like a lot more. However, if you take the time to really comb the primer and mascara on, it’s really worth it for very separated, long lashes.

Hourglass: Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick

Full size: $46 for 0.25oz

Retail value: $7.36

Price paid: $1.75

Verdict: Possibly worth it

My sample is in the color “shell”. I can’t see myself giving over $1.75 for this small sample, it just seems like a lot for what it is.

Update: I was really excited to try this on actually. I like my makeup in “stick” form, but apparently not my foundation! This one was a little too matte and cakey for me. It’s also not the easiest to blend Great as a concealer though.

Korres: Golden Krocus Ageless Saffron Elixir Serum

Full size: $98 for 1.01oz

Retail value: $1.37

Price paid: $0.33

Verdict: Worth It

The smell is too overpowering for me, but the texture is really nice. I also love the subtle gold shimmer.

Update: This is the surprise favorite out of all serums I’ve tried. I got used to the scent and really liked the gold shimmer for no-makeup days. The full size is too expensive when I have a perfectly good serum, but I will be hunting down more samples of this stuff! The tiny bottle actually lasted me a couple weeks.

Alterna Haircare: Caviar Anti-Aging Miracle Multiplying Volume Mist

Full size: $30 for 4.8oz

Retail value: $8.75

Price paid: $2.07

Verdict: Worth It (for others)

I don’t blow-dry my hair, so this is an item I won’t be able to comment on.

Burberry: My Burberry Black Perfume

Full size: $125 for 3oz.

Retail value: $2.50

Price paid: $0.59

Verdict: Not worth it (for me)

I looovveee this scent. I’m also very allergic to perfumes. But for that one whiff before I sneezed, it was awesome.

Value of this month’s box: $42.12

Yahoo! This is awesome! Even though I won’t be using at least 2 of the products, I’m really pleased with the box as a whole and love the variety and quality of the products included.
